Angela’s new work showing at exhibition called Watershed

Angela has a new project called Watershed, at St Albans Cathedral, during the whole month of May 2025, with XAP’s Artists, Laura Dekker and Liz Sergeant, https://www.xartsprojects.org, bears witness to this crisis of our rivers and particular the River Ver, which runs through the ancient city of St Albans (the Roman Verulamium). The Ver presents a microcosm of this emergency: this unique chalkstream ecosystem been exposed to almost continuous sewage overflow between March 2024 and to date, causing extreme pathogen levels and ecosystem damage.

Angela created a large sculpture called ‘turbulence’ made of willow, 5 metres high, 6 metres wide and 5 metres depth. Willow is a fast-growing sustainable wood, used for centuries to make baskets and a variety of other useful objects. In the past many people had skills to use willow. The willow was harvested locally along the valley of the river Ver. The sculpture mimics the interplay of water currents, the movement at different depths in the water column. The willow moves organically, finding different directions of travel, like water. In addition, ‘turbulence’ also refers to the changes in our climate affecting the river environment – increasing rainfall, flash flooding and the accompanying pollution.
